Adapting Homes

Design of the times

We’ve all found short-term fixes to adapt our homes to the new norm of carving out disinfecting zones, working remote, home schooling, and finding spaces for alone time. We met the immediate challenge while becoming more aware, in certain instances, that the ideal space requires physical adaptations for the long-term.

Bjorn Design is actively helping clients address spatial, audible and ergonomic needs as construction has picked up and showrooms have reopened by appointment. Virtually, we are able to identify solutions and design interiors, while maintaining active client engagement safely.

Entries. Our latest project includes a mudroom adapted to minimize stress when stepping out or returning back home. Open shelving provides spaces to place mail, packages, masks and shoes. A hands-free faucet and soap dispenser limit points of contact, while antimicrobial surfaces aid in cleanup. A bench opposite provides seating for putting-on/taking-off shoes and sits below a row of coat hooks.

Side entries, mud rooms, even garage space can be transformed to meet the new needs of everyday life.

Home office & schooling. Our redesign of this master closet created a much-needed space for both work and studies. By relocating the closet doorway, we were able to repurpose existing floor-area into a new office space. Custom cabinetry conceals a printer and provides functional storage to the office, while the desktop is fully integrated by pairing the custom top with a free-standing adjustable desk base.

Extra bedrooms, dining rooms, large vestibules, even hallway nooks are potentially new office and schooling areas.

Finding space. The recurring use of built-in window seating in our projects provide welcoming areas adaptive to time and use. A comfortable kitchen banquette in durable finishes is functional for meals, work, and learning. A custom window seat, or adding a cushion to an existing window ledge, create multi-use spaces to relax and rejuvenate.

Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, any space by a window can be transformed for varied use throughout the day.
